Lip Enhancement in South Yarra

Shape, balance and definition, built slowly and always in proportion with the rest of your face.

Medical Treatment · Shape, Balance & Definition

Let us talk lips. Shape, balance and definition, built slowly and always in proportion with the rest of your face.

Lips are one of the most commonly requested cosmetic treatments, and one of the most visible. They are also the feature people are most cautious about, which is why so many of the conversations we have in this room start with the same sentence: "I want something, but I really do not want to look like I have had anything done."

That is a fair thing to want, and it is entirely achievable. It just takes a slower approach than the industry has trained people to expect.

Before we go any further, one honest note about what you will and will not find on this page. Australian law restricts what any clinic can publish about treatments involving prescription medicines. We cannot name those medicines or advertise them to you, and we have chosen not to publish injectable pricing either, because what is appropriate for your face is not something anyone can work out from a number. That is not us being coy. It exists so that decisions about medical treatments happen in a consultation with a practitioner who has actually assessed you, rather than off a website. So this page is about how we think, what we look at, and what the process is like. The specifics belong in the room with you.

What people actually come in for

Very few people arrive asking for a millilitre of anything. They arrive with a feeling. These are the concerns we assess most often.

Lips that look flatter than they used to

Often noticed by someone in their late thirties or forties who sees their lips looking flatter or less defined in photos, without being able to say exactly what changed.

An upper lip that disappears on smiling

Very common, and often a proportion issue rather than a volume one.

Asymmetry between the two sides

Almost everyone is asymmetric. Sometimes it is worth addressing and sometimes it truly is not, and we will tell you which.

Lipstick that bleeds into fine lines

Fine vertical lines around the mouth, which have far more to do with skin quality and sun exposure than with lip volume.

Downturned corners at rest

A mouth that reads as sad or stern when the face is relaxed, often paired with a deepening line running down from the corner of the mouth.

Chronic dryness that balm does not fix

Lip skin has very few oil glands of its own, so it dehydrates faster than the skin around it.

A previous result you are unhappy with

A significant part of our week. Heavy, shelf-like, sitting above the lip line, or simply a shape that never suited the face it was placed on.

Wanting previous treatment reduced or removed

Common, and something we treat as a proper medical decision with its own assessment rather than a quick undo.

A smile that shows a lot of gum

Often muscular rather than volumetric, and assessed very differently to a lip that needs shape.

If you recognised yourself in more than one of those, that is normal. Lips are rarely one concern on their own.

What is actually happening to lips over time

This is the part that helps most people, because once you understand what changed, the goal stops being "bigger" and starts being "restored".

The border softens

The vermilion border, the crisp edge where lip meets skin, is what makes a lip look defined. It blurs with age and sun exposure, and a blurred border is one of the main reasons lipstick migrates and a lip reads as older, even when the volume is still there.

The philtrum lengthens

The distance between the base of the nose and the top of the lip gradually increases through life. As it does, the upper lip rolls inward and shows less pink. This is why a lip can look thinner without actually having lost much tissue.

The cupid's bow flattens

The little peaks that give the upper lip its shape soften and the whole lip reads flatter and less expressive.

The support underneath changes

Lips do not sit on nothing. They are supported by the bone and soft tissue of the mid and lower face, and both change over time. The bone of the upper jaw remodels and recedes with age, which alters the platform the lips sit on. This is why treating a lip in isolation, with no reference to the structure behind it, so often produces a result that looks stuck on.

Collagen and elastin decline

From the mid twenties, the skin's collagen production slows and existing collagen breaks down faster, particularly under UV exposure. Around the mouth this shows up as fine vertical lines, thinner skin, and a lip that has lost its bounce.

The muscle keeps working

The orbicularis oris, the ring of muscle around the mouth, is in near constant use. Decades of talking, smiling, drinking and expressing etch lines into skin that has been thinning at the same time.

Hydration is a genuine issue

Lip skin is much thinner than facial skin, its protective barrier is only a few cell layers deep, and it has very few oil glands. Water is lost through it faster than through the skin around it, which is why lips chap in winter, burn in summer, and why a lip that is simply dehydrated can look older than it is.

Most lips that people are unhappy with are some combination of all seven. Which is exactly why the answer is not always volume.

Our philosophy on lips

We should say the quiet part first: we treat fewer lips than we could, and we build results slowly.

We assess before we treat, every time

That means looking at your whole face in repose and in movement, not just the lips in a mirror. We look at proportion between the upper and lower lip, the length of your philtrum, your dental show when you talk and smile, the support of your mid face, your skin quality, and how your mouth actually moves. What we find determines the plan, and sometimes the plan is not lips at all.

Facial harmony beats any single feature

A beautiful lip on a face it does not suit is not a beautiful result. We are always treating a face, not a feature, and we would rather adjust the plan than force a shape that was never yours.

Movement is part of the result

A lip that looks lovely still and moves strangely when you talk is a failed result, no matter how it photographs. We assess in animation for exactly this reason.

Slow and steady, and we would rather do too little

Small amounts, reviewed properly, built over time. There is a good anatomical case for this restraint. Published work on facial overfilled syndrome describes how volume delivered into the wrong tissue plane can spread and accumulate over time, and the conclusion of that work is the same as our practice: small amounts, assessed in movement, reviewed before more is considered.

Sometimes less is the treatment

Rebalancing, softening or reducing what is already there can be more transformative than adding anything. If that is what your face needs, that is what we will recommend, even though it is the less lucrative conversation.

We are comfortable saying no

If you are not a suitable candidate, if the timing is wrong, if what you are describing would not achieve what you actually want, or if the honest answer is that your lips are lovely and the issue is somewhere else entirely, we will tell you. You will not be sold to in this room.

Trends are cyclical. Your face is not

What suits one season of beauty may not suit the next, and repeated treatment and repeated correction over many years can change tissue in ways that are not always straightforward to undo. The version of your face you started with is worth protecting.

The goal, always, is that you look like you on a good day. Not like a trend, and not like anyone else's mouth.

When the answer is not volume at all

This is the part worth reading even if you came here certain about what you wanted.

Not every lip concern is a volume concern, and injectables are not always the right tool. Because we also work across skin, laser and wellness, we can offer a plan that does not involve a needle when that is the better answer, and for a great many people the thing that actually changes how their mouth looks is not injectable at all.

Skin quality around the mouth

Fine vertical lines, crepey texture and a blurred lip border respond to treatments that build collagen in the skin itself. Our dermal clinicians use advanced skin needling with medical boosters, considered peels at the level your skin can tolerate, and LED to support healing and calm inflammation. This is often the honest answer for someone whose lipstick bleeds.

Light and pigment

Sun damage around the mouth, and the loss of a crisp, well defined lip edge, are frequently a photodamage story. Our Lumenis M22 platform and a properly structured skin plan address the surface issues that no volume will fix.

Cosmeceutical skincare

We are a stockist of iS Clinical among other cosmeceutical ranges. Used consistently, well formulated actives can support skin texture and the appearance of fine lines around the mouth. It is often the least invasive place to start, and for some people it is the only thing they need.

Hydration and health from the inside

Lip skin shows dehydration readily. Our naturopath Alida looks at the general health factors that can contribute to skin dryness and irritation, including nutrition, hydration and stress. It is a supportive conversation rather than a treatment for your lips, and it suits some people more than others.

Muscle behaviour

Some lip concerns, including a smile that shows a lot of gum and a mouth that pulls downward at rest, are about how the muscles around the mouth are working rather than how much tissue is there. These are assessed and treated as medical concerns in consultation, and we will explain your options properly in person.

A good number of the people who come to us about their lips leave with a skin plan rather than an injectable one. That is a legitimate outcome, not a lesser one.

What the process looks like

1. A complimentary consultation

Consultations are complimentary, with no obligation to book treatment and no cost recouped in treatment pricing. Bookings are subject to availability and our cancellation policy. We sit down properly. You tell us what you have noticed, what you like about your mouth, what you do not, and what you are worried about. We take a full medical history. We assess your face at rest and in movement, and we talk honestly about what is achievable and what is not.

2. A plan, not a sales pitch

If treatment is appropriate, we will explain what we recommend, in what order, over what timeframe, what it involves, what the risks are and what it will cost for your plan specifically. If treatment is not appropriate, or if the timing is not right, we will tell you that instead. You are never obliged to book anything on the day, and we would generally rather you went away and thought about it.

3. The treatment itself

Performed by Caitlin King, Registered Nurse, AHPRA registration number NMW0002014358, with comfort measures in place and a technique built around reviewing as we go, not filling to a number. Everything we use is sourced through reputable Australian distributors, and we hold ourselves to strict cold chain, storage and handling protocols.

4. Aftercare and review

You go home with clear written aftercare and a direct line to us if anything concerns you. We review you afterwards, because lips settle and the honest assessment of a result is made at review, not on the day. If something needs adjusting, we adjust it.

Risks, recovery and honest expectations

We would rather you read this than not.

Any injectable treatment carries risk. For lips specifically, swelling is expected and can be significant in the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours, particularly with the upper lip. Bruising is common and can take up to two weeks to fully resolve. Tenderness, small lumps in the settling phase and temporary asymmetry are all possible. Most people are socially presentable within a few days, but this varies from person to person and we will not tell you it is a lunchtime treatment, because for some people it is not.

Less common but more serious risks include infection, nodule formation, product moving from where it was placed, and activation of cold sores in people who are prone to them.

The most serious risk is vascular occlusion, where product blocks or compresses a blood vessel. This can cause tissue damage and scarring, and in very rare cases, where vessels connected to the eye are involved, vision loss. It requires immediate recognition and emergency management, which is why it matters that you are treated by an experienced practitioner in a properly equipped clinic with the training, equipment and emergency protocols to manage it immediately. We will talk you through this, and the full risk profile, in detail before you consent to anything.

Results are not permanent, but they also do not always resolve as quickly as people expect, and some product can persist longer than the usual quoted timeframes. Individual responses vary, and no one can promise you a specific outcome. Anyone who does is telling you something they cannot know.

Please do not book lip treatment immediately before a wedding, a holiday or an event. Allow at least four weeks, ideally six.

If you have had lips done elsewhere

A meaningful proportion of our lip work is correction, and we want to be careful about how we say this: we are not interested in criticising another practitioner's work, and a result you are unhappy with is not always a result that was done badly. Faces change, product behaves differently in different tissue, and what suited you five years ago may not suit you now.

What we will do is assess honestly. Sometimes the answer is to leave it well alone and let it soften on its own. Sometimes it is to rebalance the surrounding areas so the lip sits better in the face. Sometimes it is a medical treatment to reduce or remove what is already there, either partially to refine the shape or fully to start again, which is a procedure with its own risks and its own assessment rather than a casual undo. We will explain which of these applies to you and why.

If you are anxious about that conversation because you feel silly about a decision you made, please do not be. It is one of the most common conversations we have, and there is no judgement in this room.

Frequently asked questions

How long do lip results last?

It varies considerably between individuals, and depends on the treatment, your metabolism, your anatomy and how much movement your mouth gets. We will give you a realistic timeframe for your specific plan at consultation. What we can say is that we would rather you came back for a small refinement sooner than carried a large result for longer.

Will I look overdone?

We cannot promise you a particular outcome, and individual results vary. What we can tell you is how we work: small amounts, assessed in movement, and reviewed before anything further is considered. If looking obviously treated is your main worry, say so at consultation, because it changes how conservatively we start.

Does it hurt?

Lips are a sensitive area and we will not pretend otherwise. We use comfort measures and most people find it very manageable, but your experience is your own and we will check in with you throughout.

How much swelling should I expect?

Expect noticeable swelling for the first day or two, sometimes more with the upper lip, settling over the following week. Ice, sleeping slightly elevated and avoiding alcohol and strenuous exercise for twenty-four hours all help. Full settling takes around two weeks, which is why we review you rather than judging the result on day one.

What is product migration?

This is when product moves beyond where it was placed, most visibly above the upper lip border, creating a shelf or a shadow. It has multiple causes including technique, product choice, volume, repeated treatment over years and individual tissue behaviour. It is assessable and it is usually addressable. Bring it in and we will look at it.

Can previous treatment be reduced or removed?

Some previous treatment can be addressed, and some cannot, depending on what was used. This is one of the many reasons we ask what has previously been placed and by whom, and it is a medical assessment in its own right, not a casual undo. We will explain your options in consultation. It is also a very good reason to be conservative in the first place.

How much does it cost?

We are not permitted to publish pricing for cosmetic injectable treatments, and honestly, a price list would be the wrong way to make this decision anyway. What is appropriate for your face is not something that can be worked out from a number. You will be given a full and specific cost for your plan at consultation, before you commit to anything, with no pressure to proceed.

Am I too old or too young for this?

We do not treat anyone under 18 for cosmetic procedures. Beyond that, age is far less relevant than anatomy, skin quality and what you are actually trying to achieve. Some of our loveliest lip work is on women in their sixties, and it is almost always about restoring definition rather than adding size.

Can I have treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. We do not perform cosmetic injectable treatments during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We can absolutely look after your skin in the meantime, and there is plenty we can do.

Do I have to have injectables to see you about my lips?

Not at all. Plenty of people come in for a lip conversation and leave with a skin plan. Both are a good outcome.

Where are you and how do I get to you?

We are at 525 Chapel Street, South Yarra, a short walk from South Yarra station and the Toorak Road end of Chapel Street. See our locations.

Come and have the conversation

If you have been thinking about your lips for a while, quietly, but you are hesitant about looking overdone, unsure whether it would suit you, or you simply have burning questions you want answered, this is the room for that conversation.

Book a complimentary consultation online, or call or text us on 0478 844 048. Consultations are complimentary, with no obligation to book treatment and no cost recouped in treatment pricing, and are subject to availability and our cancellation policy.

You can also read more about enhancing facial contours and facial volume and youthfulness, or meet the team.

This information is general in nature and is not a substitute for personalised medical advice. All cosmetic procedures carry risks, individual responses and individual results vary, and suitability can only be determined at a consultation with a qualified practitioner. We do not provide cosmetic injectable treatments to anyone under 18 years of age. Treatment provided by Caitlin King, Registered Nurse (AHPRA NMW0002014358).
