Sun Spots, Pigmentation and How Your Skin Ages

Sun damage is the most preventable driver of skin ageing we see. Here is how we approach sun spot removal and pigmentation at Plump, and why earlier is easier.

Every Australian summer leaves a trace. At first it is a few freckles that deepen, a patch that never quite fades, a tone that looks a little uneven in photos. Left alone, it settles into sun spots, blotchy pigmentation and a dullness that makes skin look older than it is.

Pigmentation is rarely just a colour problem. The same UV exposure that triggers excess pigment also breaks down collagen and elastin, encourages broken capillaries and roughens texture. Sun spots are simply the most visible sign of photoageing, which is why treating them is part of looking after your skin health and the way it ages, not only how it looks.

Why it pays to treat sun damage early

Pigment that has been building for years, layered summer on summer, sits deeper and denser in the skin and is more stubborn to shift. Caught earlier, it generally responds more readily, and the plan to keep it under control is simpler.

Waiting until the problem is bad means treating the pigment and the ageing that came with it. Starting early means protecting collagen, keeping tone even and staying ahead of it, rather than spending years trying to catch up.

Assessment first: what kind of pigmentation is it?

Not all pigmentation is the same, and the wrong treatment can make some types worse. Sun spots, melasma and the marks left after breakouts each behave differently. At your skin consultation we use dermatoscopy with Wood's lamp and cross polarised light to see how deep the pigment sits, whether it is epidermal or dermal, and how much redness and vascular change sits alongside it.

Any spot that is new or changing is checked by your GP or skin cancer doctor before we treat it. Cosmetic treatment comes after a clear skin check, never instead of one. Cancer Council Australia explains how to check for signs of skin cancer.

Sun spot removal and pigmentation: our go-to treatments

Homecare

This is the foundation, and nothing in clinic holds without it. Daily broad spectrum SPF 50, reapplied, stops new pigment forming while we treat what is there. Pigment-regulating actives then do the steady daily work. Dermaceutic Dual+ is our go-to for pigmentation, alongside the iS Clinical range, prescribed to your skin rather than off a shelf. Great skin is built in the clinic and at home. Shop our pigmentation homecare online: the tyrosinase-inhibiting iS Clinical Brightening Complex and Brightening Serum, Super Serum Advance+ for vitamin C antioxidant protection, the Extra Strength Active Brightening System for at-home resurfacing, Dermaceutic Mela Cream overnight, AIRYDAY SPF 50+ every morning, and Dermaceutic K Ceutic to protect the skin after in-clinic treatment. Or browse our full iS Clinical range.

Signature Plump and Glow chemical peels

Our Signature Plump and Glow treatments use Level 1 and Level 2 clinical peels, selected to your skin condition and tolerance. They resurface the upper layers where sun-related pigment collects, brighten and even tone, refine texture, and prepare the skin to respond better to everything that follows.

Skin needling with targeted pigmentation boosters

Advanced skin needling stimulates collagen and elastin while creating thousands of micro-channels in the skin. Through those channels we apply a medical booster infusion topically (mesotherapy), formulated to your skin rather than one generic serum. For pigmentation, that typically means pigment-targeting actives: tranexamic acid, niacinamide, ascorbic acid and glutathione. Where indicated, we combine them with regenerative boosters such as polynucleotides (PDRN and salmon DNA), exosomes, peptides and growth factors to repair skin that sun damage has aged. For pigment-prone skin, we use tyrosinase inhibitors before treatment to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, and after treatment to protect the skin and maintain your results. It is the treatment that addresses tone and skin quality at the same time. Read our full skin needling and medical booster guide.

IPL with the Lumenis M22 Stellar XPL

IPL delivers filtered light that is absorbed by pigment and by the small vessels behind sun-related redness. Treated sun spots typically darken and then flake away over the following week or so, and a course clears the scattered pigment and flushing that photodamage leaves behind. It is one of the most effective tools we have for established sun damage.

A plan, not a single treatment

Effective sun spot removal is best done in sequence: homecare to prepare the skin, peels to resurface, then needling or IPL where the assessment points, followed by maintenance to keep results holding. The right order depends on your pigment type, your skin and your timing, so we build it with you. You can read more about how we treat pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove sun spots on your face?

With a plan rather than a single product. Daily SPF and pigment-regulating homecare slow new pigment, while in-clinic treatment such as IPL, chemical peels and skin needling with targeted boosters lifts what is already there. Which combination suits you depends on the type and depth of pigment found at assessment.

Is IPL good for pigmentation?

For sun spots and diffuse sun-related pigmentation, it is one of our most effective tools. The light is absorbed by melanin, and treated spots typically darken and then flake away over the following week or so. Melasma behaves differently and needs its own plan, which is one reason assessment comes first.

Can you remove pigmentation from your face permanently?

Treatment can clear existing sun damage very well, but skin keeps responding to UV for life. New pigment will form if the skin is not protected, which is why daily SPF and good homecare are part of every plan. Maintenance treatment is what keeps results holding year after year.

Do sun spots go away on their own?

Rarely. Sun spots tend to persist and slowly darken with each summer of exposure. Strict sun protection can soften them over time, but established spots usually need in-clinic treatment to shift. The earlier they are treated, the less layered and stubborn the pigment tends to be.

What do cancerous sun spots look like?

That is not something anyone should judge from a description. A spot that is new, changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding, itchy or unlike your other spots needs a skin check with your GP or skin cancer doctor before any cosmetic treatment. If anything looks uncertain at assessment, we refer before treating.

If sun spots or uneven tone are starting to show, now is the easiest time to treat them. Book a skin consultation at our South Yarra clinic, or call or text us on 0478 844 048.
